King's crown

©2004 Heleen van den Hombergh

Show them you are made of hardwood
rare species that you are
And when you fall you fall with grace
ruining the whole damn place
when your crown falls down
when your crown falls down with thunder

Tell them of your noble lineage
tough species that you are
The traitors push you off your throne
but when you fall it’s not alone
You will tear them down
as your crown comes down
they’re under!

Next morning when the sun comes up
you’ll see descendants waiting
tender as they are
One of them will stay
he’ll find his way
Lay down, your roots are there
Food to your heirs
Food to the crowds
Food to the wild!

So give it one more look, your palace
the great green hall below
Your solitary youth you fought
a battle to the top, you thought
you out-shadowed all
but your rival’s fall
is revenged now…

You fall you fall,
but you voice will be heard
somewhere
You fall you fall
but your tale will be told
far beyond the woods
